IVF Process Timeline

The success rate of IVF treatments is very much high compared to other fertility treatments such as IUI and other assisted reproductive technology. Many who undergo IVF treatment will have additional embryos available for freezing. IVF can be used to maximize the chance of aged patients conceiving. It has been used for a long time and is a safe method.

IVF involves several steps- Ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer. One cycle of IVF can take about two to three weeks.

  1. Ovulation induction – The start of the IVF cycle begins by using synthetic hormones to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. For this reason, several different types of medications are used: Medication for Ovarian stimulation – You might receive an injectable medication containing follicle-stimulating hormone or a luteinizing hormone (LH) or combination of both.
  2. Egg retrieval – This can be done in a clinic 34 to 36 hours after the final injection and before ovulation. Mature eggs are placed in a nutritive liquid (culture medium) and incubated. Eggs that appear healthy and mature will be mixed with sperm to attempt to create embryos. However, not all eggs may be successfully fertilized.
  3. Sperm Retrieval – If you’re using your partner’s sperm, a semen sample needs to be provided at your doctor’s office. Typically, the semen sample is collected through masturbation. After that sperm are separated from the semen fluid in the lab.
  4. Fertilization – Fertilization can be attempted using two methods:
    - Conventional insemination – During conventional insemination, healthy sperm and mature eggs are mixed and incubated overnight.
    - Intracytoplasmic sperm injection – In ICSI a single healthy sperm is inserted directly into each mature egg.
  5. Embryo Transfer – It takes place two to five days after egg retrieval. You might be given a mild sedative. This procedure is usually painless but you might face mild cramping. The doctor will insert a long thin, flexible tube containing the embryo into the uterus. If successful, an embryo is implanted in the lining of your uterus about six to ten days after egg retrieval.
